the cheap cotton they got to make textiles and export to get rich. That allowed the north to industrialized. The industrialization allowed the north to reduce production costs. Then the north turned on the south who had structured their economy to provide cheap materials to the north.
Slavery could have ended peacefully if the north focused on returning some of the profits of slave labor to the south to help industrialize the south. Instead they expected southerners to commit economic suicide.
