Look at the upper admin instability at the time Thomas was hired at Illinois. Illinois lost Provost, President, and were in disarray over the Salaita situation and then the medical school.

Then, look at situation when MU hired their current AD. Protests, resignations, just a mess.

ADs are important but the people who hire the AD is even more critical.
