the Big 12's instability. Nebraska and Colorado had just left and the Big 12 was on life support. It was at the peak of the Big 12's instability. At the time, I was greatly concerned about Missouri's future as a power conference school and possibility of falling to a mid-major conference, and coaches were aware of that possibility as well. Look at what happened to UConn — do you think that job is as attractive after falling to the mid-major ranks? Not even close. The mere possibility of that happening to Mizzou probably knocked us from top 20-25 to top 40 or so. It was significant.
On top of that, there weren't a lot of great candidates at the time anyway, and Mike Alden was our AD.
