Consumers would not retain all of their purchasing power. You acknowledge that some banks would fail - how would people "purchase" when their bank fails (and they lose their $) - or their credit card/debit card doesn't work because that bank failed...or they can't use the internet/debit/credit card because the government owned satellites don't function?

For most Americans, life would be worse - much worst.
