conceit" of central planners.
Donald Trump may think he knows a lot of things, but he doesn't know the industrial HVAC industry as well as Carrier and its executives and employees. If the tax breaks are reason alone to keep production here, then that is a good thing, and it's a sign that all companies need tax breaks all the way down to close to zero.
But if there is something more than that (which there probably is), then Carrier will keep its production in the US against its better judgment (before the arms of government became involved). That is where Trump and Pence know no better, and they should not stick their noses in this business.
"In the long run, what Trump is doing may well end up lowering costs, not increasing them. "
Doubtful based on the numbers Carrier was espousing before the government got involved.
"It's about time the United States at least made an attempt to compete."
Some areas are going to have a comparative advantage over the US in terms of labor costs. We shouldn't fear that, we should welcome that. Ultimately, we want more, cheaper, and better HVAC units. Our goal is not and should not be jobs.
