The weight room and other facilities, to me, are analogous to a student training as an engineer and coming up with an idea that produces profit, then continuing to learn more about engineering and continuing to improve that idea to earn more profit. The athletes aren't selling the equipment. They're using it to better themselves and then making money off of that improved version.
Also worth noting IMO that the engineering program probably isn't making millions off of students, and their professors aren't usually making millions, either. If the university's engineering department designed a new electric car and was selling that for a profit while the professors got rich, I don't think anyone would object to a few top engineering students earning a little cash on the side posing in ads for Tesla.
