University equipment? I don't think so. So probably not the best analogy.

The obvious problem is that endorsements become a recruiting tool. So now, head coaches will need to liaise with local businesses to line up endorsement deals to land recruits? Huge can or worms and could result in strengthening the existing college football powers making it into a more exclusive club than it already is. College basketball will go through a similar consolidation but less so since there are more teams in the fray.
