"protective" laws? Do you not think that they prevent any accidents, injuries or death?

I think that they most certainly do reduce all of the above.

I also think that there are multiple interests that can move those societal boundaries, but that society as a whole can and does have an influence.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has had a large effect on our drunk driving laws.

Perhaps you ought to start DAMM, Drunks Against Madd Mothers to increase or eliminate those blood alcohol limits for drivers.

Fwiw I have a cousin whose only daughter was killed by a very drunk driver. That event has had a very large effect upon how he views drinking and driving. I would bet that if one of your children or other loved ones was killed or severely injured by a drunk driver that you might reevaluate your position as well.
