Maryland passed a Constitution in which it said all people were free and equal and had certain rights. A slave woman, Mum Betts, sued for her freedom based on that and was granted her freedom.

Surprised that apparently didn't happen more, but wasn't going to in the south in any case. And there's still people down here who swear slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War.

No wonder they're called ignorant.
