But the law at the time did not distinguish to a significant degree a person's property whether it was a horse, a dog or a slave.
As i said initially, it was immoral but legal. Immorality is an opinion, legality is a fact. The court does not sit in judgement on morality, but on the letter and meaning of the law.
I appreciate you point about a slaveowner relocating rather than just visiting a free state. Hadn't considered that.
