He dismissed Dred Scott's case on procedural grounds. There was no reason to opine on the legality of the Missouri Compromise, but he did so anyway.
The majority held that negroes could not be American citizens, whether enslaved or free, and therefore did not have standing to sue in federal court. That should have ended the decision.
