heading from 1999-2000, Norm was losing White regardless, he was going to lose Dooling who did not like Norm, was quite likely to lose Gilbert following his best friend out the door, and was NOT going to get Rush. Rush was not on the team in 1999 and publicly stated he was not going to play for Norm. We only got Rush after Quin was hired.
If Norm had a few more good years in him, where the hell were they in 96, 97, & 98? Why did his best Big 12 finish happen in the single weakest year in Big 12 basketball history and then he got upset by plss poor kstate in the first Big 12 Tourney game? If Norm had been MU's coach in 2000, that season would have been a disaster. I'm not anti Hafer or Grawer in any way, but you sure as hell don't want those two as your best players that you're relying on every possession.
Quin was universally regarded as a great hire. Not just by Mizzou fans but every pundit out there. He needed some time to learn on the job but the big problem was Alden. Gave him ZERO guidance early and then micromanaged him to death after a couple of NCAA peeks. Quin's early recruiting was better than anything Norm had done in years and was better than anything Norm had done in 20 years without the violations in Detroit.
Anderson was not a great hire. He was an emotional hire made by a racially charged BoC and AD fighting for his career who came from a system that systematically underachieved. Yeah, he was a guy with the system that could keep you relevant, but it did not achieve top tier success unless everything broke just perfectly. Had he stayed at Mizzou, Mizzou fans would despise him more than they already do. He had peaked and was sliding. Which was proven by his lack of success at Arkansas where he had all the support he wanted.
Haith was a failed, panic hire. You are correct here. he was not a good coach, he failed at every job he had aside from a brief window at Mizzou and he left because he couldn't trick Alden into extending him before the wheels fell off...which Haith knew was about to happen.
Kim was a BS hire but a dying AD who just said FU to everything Mizzou.
Cuonzo was an uninformed hire. Some people saw the few sparkles of glitter, but some saw the deeper issues. Everything I said about him starting in 2011 when many MU fans began campaigning for him, proved to be true.
Gates is actually the most logical hire since Quin. I'm not sure how it will play out and he was not on my list, but after researching him, he has a better shot at success than MA, FH, KA, or CM.
This whole debate plsses me off in two ways.
1. Mizzou has basically sucked for 30 years.
2. I do not actually like being put into the position of dogging Norm. But I know I'm right when I'm the guy who defends Norm to outsiders and has to be the guy to introduce a little reality to Mizzou fans. The truth, as always, lies in the middle.
