managed to get a top 5 recruiting class like Romar had done? I could have seen it happening. I also could have seen him getting fired when the #1 player in the nation decides he doesn't want to attend the school.

What I think happened. UW's season ends. Pat Forde reports Romar is going to be retained despite the terrible season because he has the #1 recruit, has a huge buyout, and is well liked at UW. Cuonzo and Sterk work out an agreement. They contact Porter or his reps to gauge interest. Porter says he's interested and negotiates a contract. Porter tells Romar/UW AD that he is going back to Missouri. UW sees the #1 recruit going away and the ticket sales that he would have brought and decide to move a different direction. This didn't all necessarily happen over the course of a single day.
