some years a team is loaded with tons of talent, so a successful season might mean Elite 8/Final Four or bust.

other years, teams are in a rebuilding/down phase, so a successful season might mean as little as just showing improvement from the previous year.

nobody would hang their hat on 'improvement over last year', or lower their standards to that level -- it's just understanding the current situation is all.
