prioritize soccer over other athletic options they see as a path to fame and fortune. This was discussed at length by one of the iconic English club managers some years ago and, I believe, it’s still true today. We develop and promote US soccer players from wealthier suburban clubs while European and South American teams look to poor, urban areas where soccer is the only sporting activity, kids have access to.
In England, for instance, suburban kids are more likely to choose rugby, or cricket over soccer. Since rugby is an interscholastic sport in England it becomes much more akin to the organization and operation of US soccer programs.
Bottom line, our very best athletes are not, typically, directed toward soccer as a sport, but rather basketball football. This is especially true for the kids who are just starting to participate
