Not sure athletes from other sports would really matter because they wouldn’t be able to make the team.

The difference is what I said. Kids grow up playing soccer constantly in other countries. Nobody gets out of school in America and gathers for a soccer game as play, just doesn’t happen. Soccer isn’t like basketball where a maniac like Pistol Pete can practice by himself for hours, you need lots of other high level kids playing together to develop your skills. In America that happens by practicing which is very different than from playing.
