early 1970s. Pele was known, indoor soccer major leagues ... it was big in many cities back then... meaning it had a good following all the way back then

with 300 million + people there is has to be a decent percentage of kids whose first love is soccer. Actually, I saw it on my kid's team and many compete at an elite level

Even if it was only 10% of the kids then that is more than some of the populations of these countries that are competitive.
Maybe it is why women's soccer is more competitive internationally as it is one of their major sports

The men's teams aren't close at all
