They had avged 13 wins per season in the 9 years leading up to that event. Nobody had any expectations for the program and they were allowed to rebuild in obscurity with no real pressure. They were expected to get last in the Big 12 and just continued to do so. The aspect of being a private institution with incredibly low expectations and pressure made it an ideal spot for a rebuild.
The player who got murdered, Patrick Dennehy, never played for Baylor. The murderer, Carlton Dotson, avged 4 points and 2 rebounds for Baylor. That is the equivalent of losing Cameron Beidschied and Torren Jones in an offseason and saying it is the most challenging rebuild in history. The only real challenge was Roberts and Lucas being allowed to transfer without the penalty of sitting a year...which now happens to most programs each offseason.
