A new account doesn't necessarily mean a more accurate account. Especially today in this age of apostasy.
This is where and you have brought this up, conflicting views of biblical events come into play. You and I will watch the game tonight and in the end we may see different plays as being the turning point, the key factor in the game. The biblical writers didn't know at the time they were writing a book that would end up being the foundational book of Christianity at the time of their writing. Their own human factor and prejudices come into play.
Finally this is where Sacred Tradition comes into play. What can we believe ? Its interesting to note that the Church my church, untainted by Francisism, gives much leeway in belief. Bottom line, we know there was a trial, scourging, and crucifixion. I am comfortable that some of the details are up for grabs.
