there are a lot of people wounded by their upbringing, religious or otherwise. A kid gets slapped by a nun and Catholicism sucks and is totally invalid because of what they experienced. Thats not fair really.
I have no idea of what you were taught as a young devout S. Baptist. All I know is that a sola scripture approach is again, IMHO, short sighted, incomplete, and many times dangerous. If they take the Bible literally then....
I mean:
Matthew 18:8 - 9. NKJV - 8 If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you.
Like I said what the Bible means is true, avoid whatever makes you sin. Duh. Hell If I was brought up with that literal kind of faith I'd be on my way to hell, cause I don't like handling snakes and I can't see me drinking draino to show I have faith. Faith and reason should be and were for hundreds of years very much related. It got out of balance on one hand with the reformation throwing out reason and the enlightenment throwing out faith. The balance was gone.
To answer as to whether or not God asks, I'd say a resounding yup.
