But the rebels took up arms against the government because of the way the government was treating the civilians. They started winning, and we stepped in and sent military advisors, arms, and money to assist the El Salvadoran government.
The government, with its soldiers trained by the USG and arms delivered by same, began killing civilians under the pretext they were supporting the rebels. The rebels were not peacemakers either, but the government was responsible for an estimated 80-85% of the 75,0000 dead civilians.
Had the rebels won, would we have seen the same civilian death? I say no. This is where the culpability begins for the United States government.
As for MS-13 -- it started in Los Angeles.
I've never suggested reparations.
Yes, the USG has done some good. However, it's often under the auspices of foreign aid, humanitarian services, training programs, and refugee relocation and often disparaged as unnecessary by self-identifying conservatives.
