My stepfather is either first or second generation American, no one knows for sure if his father was born in Mexico or Texas, his family is as American as can be. They came here, learned the language and adopted the American culture while still holding on to some of their own.
The problem with unfettered immigration is when too many come from a single culture and see no reason to assimilate. For our country to succeed we need to have a cultural identity. I know it is old fashioned but the old melting pot theory is much superior to the modern salad bowl theory that is being suggested today.
