I would contend that we should consider that the immigration from other countries *may* *be* *a* *direct* *result* of our meddling overseas.
We funneled arms, sent military advisors, and delivered millions of dollars to El Salvador in the 1980s to back a heinous leader. It took time for the country to re-stabilize, but during that time, violence escalated. Not surprisingly, tens of thousands of civilians died and those who could, fled to the United States.
Maybe we should ask what role we had in enabling the conflict, the subsequent years of instability, and if it's morally right to forcibly send people back there.
It is my position that the overwhelming majority of Salvadorans are working to better their lives and appreciate very much the opportunities they have here. To make them leave is appalling to me.
