"A Christmas Story" is set in 1940. Don't believe me? The date is on the Orphan Annie decoder ring in the movie.
The movie is an amalgamation of a number of pseudo-autobiographical stories radio personality, Jean Shepherd told on his show. He often retold them with changes, depending on the point he was making. He also published them in periodicals like Playboy. You can find collections of his stories in a library. There are at least a couple other shows based on his short stories. I remember one which surrounded the Fourth of July. The leg lamp was part of that story, too. There was another about a vacation at a lake cabin. The characters change, too. Grover Dill was the bully he beat up and Scut Farcus was a kid who had an unbeatable top.
Whatever the settings of his stories, the implied periods don't jibe with his age. He was born in 1922.
I suffered through the TV musical. All I could do was look at my watch to see how much time was left. It didn't follow the movie too closely. It was scrubbed to be politically correct. Flick was a black kid. I believe schools were segregated in 1940. They made a big deal about Hannukah. No mention of that in the original movie. And they made a point about all the Chinese waiters in the restaurant were in college. I guess there was no time for Orphan Annie what with Hannukah and all. Oh, and no mention of Jesus. On the whole, it sucked.
