But I am also a thinking man.

It is said that Dicken's Christmas Carol essentially invented the holiday as we know it today. It is also a fact that retail outlets get a gargantuan % of their profits due to Christmas. So the shop shop shopping aspect looms large.

Ultimately it helps to teach and/or remind our children and ourselves that awesome joy is found not in the getting of but the giving of gifts.

I see Christmas as celebrated in the West to be one of the greatest of our achievement and best of our traditions.
