Change the thought experiment a little.
For instance, use Ben Shapiro's example. Five people are tied to railroad tracks behind the bridge you are standing on. A train is coming and will kill all of them unless you throw the lady standing on the bridge next to you over the rail and onto the tracks. The engineer will see her, won't be able to stop in time, but will stop. She will die, but the train will stop before killing the other five people. Would you throw her onto the tracks?
If not, and most people would not, does that mean that the five people tied to the tracks are not human beings?
