Everything you say is true. But the premise that they make money for the university is wrong. They make money for their respective athletic departments. While that money funds non-revenue earning sports, none of it gets back to the university to augment its academic programs. That benefit just isn't part of the equation. There may be some intangible benefits but the athletic departments, and the university's first and foremost remit (acedemics) are the benefactors.
