There are people that will be Mizzou fans no matter what, but good players generate a ton more revenue than just any ole player does. If Mizzou doesn't get Brad Smith and then Chase Daniel and become a great football program, then Mizzou isn't in the SEC and is making millions of dollars less a year.
Schools like UCF, FIU, or Cal State Fullerton are massive student bodies and alumni bases but haven't had good players or won enough to generate a ton of revenue. I'm not denying that there is a built-in fanbase that helps. But having good players who wins games earns schools millions more. Look at a school like Rutgers and FSU. Both are about the same size school with the same size alumni base, both play in major conferences, and both are by large metropolitan areas. But FSU has had great players and is much more competitive in revenue sports and makes about $30 million more per year.
