And football if you extend the same reasoning. In a sense, the universities have already done this. Athletic departments are their own entities, generate their own funds and control those funds. I don't agree with your conclusion that athletes make a ton of money for their university because none of that money is actually returned to the University - albeit it does fund non revenue generating athletic pursuits (everything not called basketball and football). One could argue that athletic programs actually divert funds away from universities; that is the revenue donated to athletic programs that may/would have otherwise been donated to the Universities primary goal of academics.
