base, not individual players. The fans would follow their schools regardless of who plays there, and thus the revenue would be made regardless. It has nothing to do with individual players.
Also, no one is forcing an athlete to remain amateur. If he or she wants to go pro (e.g. sign endorsement deals) then it is their right to do so... but if that's their choice then they won't be allowed to play sports at the college level.
If you think the playing field isn't level now, it would be orders of magnitude worse if not for the strict amateur requirement. Allowing endorsement deals and other forms of compensation to recruits/players/transfers would ruin the integrity and competitiveness of the game.
