Most often what happens is company's miss their sales goals. Their expenses, including salaries, are tied to those targets. TheN they start cutting expenses.

I am not a fan of cutting people. Hell in fact, I get a Mandatory Unpaid Leave of Absence in two weeks just for this various reason. Sucks but you align or you get fired yourself
