I tend to think it won't be that ambiguous

I think we will know definitively by the end of the season whether we are treading water, or worse losing ground, or if we are a significantly improved team. Due to our youth and lack of "star" player, I think we will be inconsistent, and W/L record may be higher or lower than expected.

But for those watching the team, I think we will know whether we've got a promising group of guys or not. If we see the equivalent of the exhibition game 30 times this season, that's treading water at best. But definitely too small a sample to read anything into.
