It was just an exhibition, but overall I wasn't very pleased with what I saw. Too many open 3's given up, sloppy with the ball, returning players not playing like they had experience etc. There were a few bright spots too, but it was hard to get excited about them.
Phillips-His stat line is ok, but he seemed off to me, thought he would have better playmaking in this game.
Geist-I like this kid, seems like an improvement over Isabell IMO. Should be a capable backup PG, but could easily see him play off the ball too.
Walton-Apparently he had the flu all week, and boy did it look like he did. Very sloppy, lost the ball on multiple drives, had virtually no stats in the box score. I hope this was due to his sickness.
CVL-As we all know by now, he played 36 minutes in an exhibition. I find that a bit absurd. His stats did not justify that. Sure you can do things that don't show up in the box score, but in 36 minutes you better do more than that. Not really feeling his shot, I rarely feel like it is going in.
Frankie Hughes-This was perhaps the brightest part of the exhibition. I think we got a steal with this kid. In person his length and height are more impressive to me. He has great size for the position. Absolutely love his stroke. Has a quick trigger, takes a few bad shots, but overall very happy with this freshman so far. Made some nice passes too. He will make mistakes.
Willie Jackson-Looked pretty good, but you can tell he is definitely a SF body playing PF, as many writeups projected. He'll be a good garbage man that every team should have, won't make many jumpers, will probably get swatted down low, but will be a nice contributor.
Kevin Puryear-Worst game i've ever seen him play. We didn't get him many good looks, and he didn't convert the ones he got. I'm going to write this one off as a rare dud for KP. I think he'll be fine on offense. He grabbed 8 boards so there is that. Still not what you'd like to see from last years leading scorer.
Mitchell Smith-Really skinny as we knew, but has good length. Got some blocks merely because of that. If he bulks up he could be a good player in the future. Looked ok in a few brief moments on offense, but too early to tell.
Reed Nikko-Looked like a big stiff at first, but made some nice plays that surprised me. He was easily the biggest guy on the court, so we'll see how he does from here on, but it was somewhat encouraging to see a guy coming off hip surgery do well. He didn't hit the glass, but didn't seem to have many opportunities to do so. Would like to see more of him.
Russell Woods-New year, same foul trouble. If he can stay on the floor I think he could do ok for us, but that will be tough for him, especially against bigger/better competition.
We will need to bust ass and play much better than this from here on to have any hope this year. If we play anywhere close to how we played Friday, bye bye KA.
