I don’t want to understate the loss to UMKC. It’s the worst loss at MU at least since I’ve been alive and unfortunately I’m not a particularly young man at this point. The clearly better team won, MU was dominated from start to finish on the home court and only led for a total of 34 seconds in the game. There is no defending that.
The notion that we are ‘rebuilding’ is garbage and frankly makes no sense, its completely a cop-out. Rebuilding from what? There is at least a decent probability that this is the most talented roster Kim Anderson ever coaches at MU, he wasn’t hired so that several years down the road he could pull in the talent that Haith couldn’t get to MU. The premise was that we would see a meaningful uptick in tactical approach and execution. Thus far we demonstrate poor defensive fundamentals, our offensive sets and ball movement leave a considerable amount to be desired, we aren’t putting players in positions to score, our rotations and roles are not established at all, we have lost significant key pieces from the roster, our picks and cuts are very sloppy, and we don’t put much pressure on opponents either offensively or defensively. While the roster has some limitations, nobody would view our first 4 games (exhibition included) and come away with the impression this team is maximizing its assets and is a sum greater than its parts.
I also think we are significantly underselling the importance of this season. There was an overflow of illogical good will and support for the Anderson hire, the moment to seize and capitalize on that window of opportunity is now. We can’t be turning in a 15 win season, it will have terrible long term impacts to our program. If we have the worst season at MU in the last 50 years like many are now predicting, there is very little chance that this works out to an even decent level long term.
