Actually, Monmouth has had some pretty good teams over the years. They've been to the NCAA Tournament four times before King Rice got there -- in '96, '01, '04, '06. I'm sure plenty of Monmouth fans "knew" they needed a new coach at the end of Rice's third year, maybe the second year. The AD was smart enough not to listen to them and gave Rice the chance to develop the success he and Monmouth now are enjoying.
