I'm not suggesting below that we hire King Rice. It is suggested that we watch several specific games of his to see if he can prove himself to be a potentially viable candidate. I don't think the 28 wins he accumulated are the most interesting things about him as a potential candidate, primarily its his 4 road wins against high level competition. If he can duplicate that feat again, I think he should be considered a strong possibility.
Rice took over a massive rebuild. There were no resources, no history of success, and that was not an attractive job. It was very much a program in a state similar to what our next coach will find themselves in. That is why Mike Anderson was an attractive option at the point in time he was hired, because he had already done exactly what was needed at UAB. Its reasonable to expect that whomever we hire next is going to experience quite a bit of initial losing. I'm not suggesting anyone is going to be a quick fix for this mess.
The other reason for the suggestion of Rice below is how different (in an appealing way) he is to Kim. He is very high energy, takes responsibility, has high expectations, and his teams play an exciting brand of basketball. In each case the exact opposite of Kim.
Of course hiring a mid-major with a short track record is risky. Its unfortunately the situation we find ourselves in. This is going to be risky and it may not work out. But what is certainly not going to work out is sticking with someone we know can't do the job. Kim has had a chance, its preposterous to portray it as canning him without giving him a chance. I wish it was the case that there was some aspect of this job he had only been bad at thus far, but to date he has been between terrible and incomprehensibly terrible at basically every aspect of being the head coach at MU.
Could he turn it around if given time and an opportunity to learn on the job to the point where he is a below avg coach with a below avg program? Potentially, even though nothing indicates that to be likely at this point. But even assuming everything breaks in his favor the top end potential is just so low. We know we need a new coach, the question at this point is moreso who.
