Better results in a more competitive conference, and multiple round-of-32 appearances in the NCAA tournament. He went 32-4 his final year at Buffalo.

Furthermore, Oats had *much better* Kenpom rankings at Buffalo than Gates had at Cleveland St.

His resume was far superior.
