People forget that this time last year Drink's seat was VERY hot over poor QB play. And that is 100% on him as he was the HC and the OC (and the QB coach if I remember correctly). In other words, Kirby absolutely saved his bacon last year. But Drink gets credit for that too by acknowledging he needed to hire a separate OC and let him do his thing, and for getting the right guy.
I've disagreed with everything Drink has done with the QB position, even last year. I don't dislike Cook at all and he did a good job last year, but the backup needed to get more snaps to be "game ready" in case of an injury. And there was no QB controversy to start the year and he should have just been honest about that.
I think it's fair to evaluate his ability to judge QB's at two times, before Kirby and after Kirby. Before Kirby I'd give him a D-. After Kirby I'd give him a B+ with a good chance to move up to A+ depending on what happens after Cook graduates. Kirby has made a huge positive impact on QB play and I hate that he's probably going to move up the coaching ranks to another team next year.
