Would you rather beat North Texas 49-10 in Columbia, or lose to Michigan 27-20 in Ann Arbor?
"But what if we BEAT Michigan?!"
What if we did? It's still the SEC schedule that decides our fate, not that one game. If we beat Michigan in Ann Arbor, but still manage to go 4-4 in the SEC, nobody cares. If we beat North Texas and go 6-2 in the SEC, that 10-2(6-2) might be good enough to get to the SEC Title Game or MAYBE grab an at-large into the playoff.
The point, of course, is that it's our SEC schedule that reveals whether we're a team of substance or not. Trying to play big names in the non-con is something people who still think college football in any way resembles 1988 want.
It's not 1988 anymore. Conferences are bigger, bowl games are plentiful, and there's a playoff now. The goal is to try to get to your conference title game (non-con doesn't help that) or get an at-large bid (having the highest number of wins plus winning almost all of your conference games helps that).
