“The Stein at Nine” on Thursday nights when they sold 12 ounce Budweiser drafts for a quarter from 9:00 to 10:00 PM. The place would be packed for an hour with college kids chugging drafts and going out into the alley in back to compete in the “hop, step, and puke for distance” competition.
On one memorable Thursday night, Russell Washington walked in as an alum, ordered a pitcher and chugged it without any hesitation. I did not hang around to see if the big man would hurl.
EDIT: another memory…the very first play of any Mizzou game I ever saw in person was the first game of the ‘67 season…Mizzou vs. SMU. The Mustangs had a short 5’ 6” tall quarterback. MU kicked off and on the first play from scrimmage, the SMU QB went back to pass and Russell Washington rushed unblocked from the DE position on the QB’s blindside. Washington jumped up to block a possible pass and accidentally kicked the poor QB in the head, knocking his helmet off. They took the poor guy off on a stretcher.
That was my “welcome to Mizzou football” moment.
