(1) It wasn't even a top 50 team according to Kenpom and other computer models – despite having an NBA first-rounder inherited from the previous coach.

(2) It was an extremely weak schedule. The non-con portion was arguably the weakest of all-time for the program.

(3) The "luck" in close 50/50 games was an extreme outlier (top 10 out of 363 D-1 teams, according to Kenpom's model).

This was apparent to me at the time, and I tried to explain it but no one wanted to hear it. Our AD was fooled as well, and now Gates has a $25M buyout.
