That's not a fair retelling of his argument.

One can completely believe Genesis as stated while understanding the metaphorical use of numbers to demonstrate perfection or completeness.
There are some who are quite comfortable with the statement that "a day with the Lord is like 1000 days of man" to understand that the days of Genesis 1 did not have to be 24 hour days (at least until the sun and moon are made - even then, throughout even the last few thousand years, it's been known that the earth's spin can go faster than slower than an exact 24 hours and is in fact speeding up now)
Take for instance the genealogies, many use the timelines in the genealogies to determine that the earth is only 6000 years old.
It would be completely reasonable to not just go under the assumption that every generation was named in those genealogies - rather than a naming of the notable decedents wherein.
There were 10 generations from Adam to Noah - in just 10 generations how could there be enough men to cover the face of the earth?
From Noah to the tower of Babel, it was only 3 or 4 generations. From noah's sons, that only could have been about 100-200 people on earth in order to build Babel. It's almost unreasonable to think such a tower with that limit of human resources could be built.
In the end - all that happens in the first 12 chapters of Genesis are true. It's a theology book, not a record of history.
