The earth isn’t even speaking of the planet we live on. The original audience did not have the concept of planets. Earth was simply the land around them.
It was covered in water. The flood story is returning the earth to the state before creation. That’s why it mirrors Genesis 1 with God’s breath over the waters, causing dry land to appear, plants, birds in the sky, animals appearing on land, then humans. It was an undoing and then a new creation story.
