I don’t discount Genesis 1 at all. Just your flawed

Genesis 1 is making a theological point that God is the source of order and purpose.

You miss that the next few chapters show how man’s failure to live up to that purpose brings disorder into God’s created world. And that the purpose of the flood story is showing a return to the precreation state of the watery abyss, a disordered world, followed by God bringing about a new creation with a remnant whom he saved. It’s literally the the entire Bible shrank down into the first 8 or so chapters of Genesis.
