Say you have a month where 5,000 people more died than the previous year factoring in population change, age. Then the following month 10,000 people less died, you don't get to zero out the second month and say.. we had 5,000 excess deaths for the first two months of the year.

The reality is 5,000 less people died in those two months than the previous year.
