But one of the key takeaways to Dr. Fung's book is that the whole paradigm that has been used for decades is fatally flawed. It is not about the calories in. Nor is it about exercising to increase the calories out.
There are additional variables involved and the body is constantly adjusting to both.
When you exercise more it makes you hungrier. That's why we say "working up an appetite".
When caloric intake is reduced, the body compensates by slowing the metabolism in a variety of ways.
It's like having a home that is too cold and bringing in a space heater to try and warm it up, but leaving the thermostat where it is. That space heater may kick in pretty much additional heat, but the thermostat will reduce the output of the furnace to compensate.
The key is to reset the thermostat... and that is done primarily through getting rid of the insulin resistance of the cells.
