Our bodies have a complex hormonal feedback mechanism that tries to maintain a set weight, much like a thermostat regulates temperature.

People who significantly reduce their calorie intake do lose weight in the short term, but their body begins to compensate by reducing its metabolism.

It then uses fewer calories a day. In some of the studies the lowered metabolism remained long term, beyond the limits of the study, even after calorie counts were returned to normal or even above.
