of public school teachers in the US. Just like any large population they run the gammit from criminally bad to amazingly great.

The number of teachers in unions is much smaller than you think. At the schools where I have worked I would estimate the number of union members at about 50% and most of those are just there for the insurance and liability protections that are included. In most schools there have been just a handful of active union members.

The teachers unions do not speak for all teachers. I knew a lot more that were members of subject matter professional organizations than were in the NEA or AFT.
