Maximizing TV revenue and TV markets is the driving force in college football's re-alignment, not having a nice, neat way to select the four CFP participants.
There are already more than 64 P5 programs and the number will likely increase in the not very distant future, i.e. Houston, SMU, Memphis, Boise State to name some possibilities.
Are you going to go with a organizational structure that automatically eliminates half a dozen or more programs from consideration for the CFP? Right, that will fly all the way to the nearest U.S. District Court.
Whether the CFP will be expanded will be determined by whether the TV revenue from an expanded CFP is more or less than a four team CFP with half a dozen or so big bowl games that are now largely meaningless to the anyone other than their own fans.
