I did not say that this alone should be a reason to immediately search the car but it is most definitely a reason for the cop to ask further questions.
I do not know the details of this case but I would bet almost anything that the cop did not jump straight from the rental agreement to tossing the car. I bet the agreement led to more questions whose answers made the cop more suspicious.
